Quinebaug River from Fayban CT to W. Thompson Dam Rescheduled

Fabyan Road Canoe Launch,  Fabyan Road · Quinebaug, CT

From Paddle Killingly

Details

This trip requires a car shuttle. We will meet at launch point and shuttle cars to the finish at the West Thompson Dam boat ramp as needed. This trip should take about 2 hours.

Launch Point: River Mile 22.0. A GPS address of 568 Fabyan Road, Thompson CT, will get you close. From CT Route 131, the launch is .6 mile south on
Fabyan Woodstock Road, on the left just before the bridge. Watch for
the brown sign: Fabyan Dam Canoe Launch.

Finish: River Mile 27.8. The boat ramp on West Thompson Lake in North Grosvenor Dale. It is at the end of West Thompson Lake Recreation Road, which is off of Reardon Road. A GPS of 341 Reardon Road, North Grosvenor Dale CT, will get you close to the turnoff.

This paddle will involve some fast water sections with minimal rapids. Some paddling experience on rivers is recommended for this trip.

Required equipment: PFD, 10-foot length of rope, whistle, headlamp/flashlight (for evening paddles). And be prepared to give your emergency contact number to the host if he or she asks for it.

Ribbon Cutting at “The Bend” – a new Housatonic River access location @ Just downstream from the Covered Bridge
May 25 @ 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm
Ribbon Cutting at “The Bend”
Please join us on May 25th…
WHEN: Saturday, May 25th at 2pm
WHERE: “The Bend” in West Cornwall, CT (along the Housatonic River just downstream from the Covered Bridge on Lower River Road
WHO: Everyone! Please join us to celebrate the opening of the new river access site on our beloved Housatonic!

A new river access site is opening on the Housatonic River. In the works for over a decade, the ribbon-cutting is set for Saturday, May 25, at 2pm at “The Bend” of the Housatonic River in West Cornwall.
All are invited to enjoy hot dogs and hamburgers, and a brief dedication ceremony with HVA Watershed Conservation Director Mike Jastremski, Cornwall First Selectman Gordon Ridgway, representatives from property owner Eversource Energy, the Housatonic River Commission and project designer and contractor Earth Tones Native Landscaping. Experienced boaters are encouraged to join a short paddle from The Bend down to Housatonic Meadows State Park to mark the occasion, as conditions permit.
This project was made possible with a grant from the Housatonic River Natural Resources Damages Fund Trustees including the National Fish and Wildlife Service (NFWF), Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CT DEEP), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The funds were initially awarded to HVA in 2007 on behalf of a partnership including the Housatonic Fly Fishermen’s Association (HFFA), the Town of Cornwall, Connecticut Light and Power and CT DEEP. Plans included an all-abilities-accessible fishing platform extending into the Housatonic River but subsequent engineering analysis revealed that the site was not appropriate for construction in the river channel. The plan was modified to a more traditional car-top boat launch to minimize impact to the river and adjacent wetlands, and HVA worked with residents, local organizations and state and town leaders to incorporate measures to reduce runoff and erosion from the existing site; remove invasive plants and restore native trees and shrubs; upgrade the access ramp to accommodate the Cornwall Fire Department’s river rescue boat in emergencies; and install an interpretive kiosk and a concrete pad for a portable toilet. More than 50 Cornwall residents unanimously approved the updated plans at a Town Meeting in August of 2018, and construction was completed a few months later in December.
The completed project provides safe access for boating and fishing, addresses runoff issues that had persisted at the site for decades, restores riverside wildlife habitat and provides parking for people visiting West Cornwall.
“The perseverance of everyone involved in seeing this project through from concept to construction is truly amazing” Jastremski said. “This project is a success because of all the folks who helped improve the plan over the years. We thank everyone involved and especially Cornwall’s staff and officials, our original consulting engineer Kleinshmidt, the folks at HFFA, the NRD Trustees, Eversource Energy, the Housatonic River Commission, Earth Tones, the Housatonic Environmental Action League, Connecticut Department of Historic and Cultural Resources, the Northwest Conservation District, and many, many Cornwall residents, too many to name here.”

bioFASHIONtech Summit @ Avon Theatre Film Center
Jun 24 @ 8:30 am – 12:30 pm

Come to the inaugural bioFASHIONtech Summit at the Avon Theatre in Stamford, CT, on Monday, June 24.

The Summit convenes industry makers and thought leaders, scientists and entrepreneurs, investors and retailers in an exchange of ideas, insights, and projections on the fast emerging sector of ecological fashion.

We are honored to have CT Representative Anne Hughes (District 135) and CT Senator Will Haskell (District 26) open the day.  Both legislators swept into office on a midterm tide of activism and accountability.

bioFASHIONtech is the inaugural annual summit for ecological fashion natives — the new generation of designers making planetary well-being not just a goal of our design (i.e., “do less harm”) but the defining impulse of our creative work and framework for its production.

The summit brings together makers and thought leaders, scientists and entrepreneurs, investors and retailers working at the forefront of emerging technologies for experimental textiles, new systems of community-based manufacturing, and business model innovation.

Within one year, Gen Z will outstrip millennials as the most populous generation, comprising 32% of the population. Combined, we are market force. Our values count.

Millennials and Gen Z are rightfully branded as mission-driven and impact-oriented. “Good fashion” is not good enough for an industry declared by the 2018 UN Economic Commission for Europe as an environmental emergency.

Our quest for products and processes that heal and restore ecological balance goes beyond mere sustainability. We are inspired, and compelled, by the pragmatic recognition that our lives depend on it.

Participants (in formation):

Angela Kaczmarczyk Abitua, PhD, Co-Founder, Boston Open Science Lab, Somerville, MA

Anne Biklé, biologist, co-author, The Hidden Half of Nature: The Microbial Roots of Life and Health

Michael Flanagan, PhD, Executive Director, Genspace, Brooklyn, NY

CT Senator Will Haskell (Distr. 26)

CT Representative Anne Hughes (Distr. 135)

Melissa Marra-Alvarez, curator of education and research at The Museum at FIT, Fashion Institute of Technology, NYC

David R. Montgomery, PhD, geomorphologist, author, Growing a Revolution: Bringing Our Soil Back to Life

Jacob Olmedo, ecological fashion designer; Parsons, BFA ’17; MFA ’20

Gal Yakobovitch, fashion biomaker; Parsons BFA ‘18

Catering by Purslane, Brooklyn, NY

Your ticket gains you entry to the event, including breakfast, lunch, snacks, all day coffee + tea, and hors d’oeuvres + open bar (21+) during the networking hour.
